Prelude
(The following analysis is based on the flying star chart (astrological chart from I Ching))
Before I start 2024 market forecast, let me explain what is "Jiu Yun", the Period 9 as I believe some of you may have ever heard of it.
So what is Period 9? To briefly explained, Period 9 came from I Ching (1), which is the last 20 years of 180 years cycle. And 2024 is exactly the start of Period 9, and the entire period will last till 2043. Then, the next cycle repeat again in 2044 for another 180 years.
In general, few years before entering into Period 9, there were likely commotions happened worldwide. And since early 2020, we had experienced one of darkest times of COVID-19 during the circuit breaker period. The global economies had tumbled within a month. Though many countries were bounced back on track after a year later, but the world had no longer worked the same way as before. The rise of artificial intelligence is in fact making the most advancement in its development and started to be widely adopted globally by humankind.
If we worked backward from now, the SARS outbreak that caught the whole world off-guard happened exactly 20 years ago in 2003. And one of the preventive measure that practiced during both SARS and COVID-19 period, was exercising strict control on human traffic, as well as the stock market was the first to slump in response to the uncertainties during that time. But 20 years ago, the sector that excelled most after SARS, was property sector. That was because 20 years ago in 2003, which we called Period 8 was belonged to earth element, it represented the bricks and mortar, also represented young boy or children and that's why you could probably see many tuition centers had opened for the past years. And Period 8 also represented hands, and the most significant device that swept across past decades and directly related to hand is nothing but... smart phone.
2024-2043 : What to expect
The following prediction is derived from the flying star chart, which is the astrological chart to analyze the positive and negative auras of the world. And stepping into 2024, Period 9 is not the Earth element like Period 8, instead it's a Fire element. Therefore, this new era will bloom on anything that run on electricity, and can produce heat and light. Actually, the current “Magnificent 7” in US market, and previously stock counter like Tesla… already told us the world had entered into Period 9 during the COVID-19 pandemic and will change our ways of living. The following will continue to bloom :
AI and Technology related industry (like Social Media)
Enegy related industry (like oil, natural gas, lithium... renewable energy like wind) E.g.: Lithium and nickel are the key material needed as battery minerals, is striking and news amount collaboration between countries and companies
Gold, Commodities (oil, natural gas)
Electric Vehicle
Bitcoin
Food industry
Defence; Military related industry
And in addition, the followings are some of the changes you can expect to happen:
Period 9 represents eyes, and exactly Apple had launched the Apple Vision Pro last year to impress the market.
Another characteristic of Period 9 is that many popular trends will just come and go. The duration of any well-liked theme, topic or even a person, to stay popular will not last long.
Wars will become more commonly happened during Period 9
People will become more artistic and creative, but also getting more temperamental and the change in moods can be uncalled for. Therefore, depressions can become one of the most common problems in the society.
Period 9 represents middle-aged woman, and probably more "cultural" middle aged women may take important roles in the society. Why only cultural ladies got chance... because fire represent beautiful, civilize and intellectual
And one important note for trader/investor to note if you want to survive in stock market during Period 9, must prepare to do short-term trading because buying into stock market will be like taking a roller coaster ride. And long-term investment can become patience-testing by watching prices range-bound most of the time.
Many people asked me about the outlook of property. And my 2 cents worth is that Period 9 is a fire element that gives birth to the earth element, meaning property should remain robust in some ways. But fire element still the leading element in these coming 20 years, so the investors need to be very selective with the locations as investment (can consider location that have sea-view or swimming pool at the north side) and the timings of entering the property really matter now since not all the property projects will be profitable like last time. Rental income will be the main driving force for property investors to keep its investment, rather than hoping to "flip" and make the huge capital gain like before may not as easy as before.
Last but not least, coming to which part of the world will perform better during Period 9. In general, it may not be easy to pinpoint at a few particular countries for 20 year timeline. But we all know that the climate change and war will somehow drive the food commodities price, and in turn will impact economies, consumers and manufacturers globally. Therefore, agricultural countries or countries that can produce and export natural resources will have its advantage over the others.
Due to the nature this era is quick-changing, and things can be happened very unexpectedly. Therefore I suggest in the next 5 years, investor can still stay positive in 2025, but year 2026 and 2027 are not easy to get through, and investors must not let down its guard.
Stock Market “Feng Shui” Prediction 2024
Last year, U.S., Japan and India were the best performing markets in 2023. The tech and AI--related industry had also stood up from the rest during COVID-19, and the world continues to push the tech sector further with AI, and crown Nasdaq with "Magnificant 7", replacing FAANG few years ago. On the other hand, the worst performing markets went to Hong Kong and China in 2023, and besides political tumoils wth U.S., the burst of housing bubbles surely was one of the reasons that funds left China to elsewhere for greener pasture.
Come back to Singapore, as we faced the problems arising from global political instability, STI continue to stay put above 3000 level but likely to struggle with the same challenges for a while in 2024.
Today, markets indulged with the America's 'Anything But China' attitude, and will such sayings stay in 2024? Well, I dare not to say No, with US Election taking place end of this year, and therefore US recession may not happen this year. In fact, the ruling party will try to hold its indexes at high level as long as possible. Even though the flying start chart in 2024 showing a jinx star in the west direction, as such investor can consider to reduce your US portfolio if the price really run up too fast.
Currently, what matter most in the markets is exactly when is the US interest rate cut? Fund managers are expecting the first rate cutting should kick-in in June this year since the previous forecast of rate cute had been reducing from 6 times to now, 3 times. Anyway, my forecast is also about the same time. As the matter of fact, 2024 is a election year for many countries, and Taiwan had just elected a new president in the beginning of this year, and the next election in the limelight will be at Russia in March. Therefore, this year will be full of surprises.
Anyway, this year 2024’s bazi is quite special. As all 5 elements (Gold, Water, Wood, Fire, Earth) are “Yang” and all of them have its own timing to become the strongest element in the bazi. The following is for your reference:
Stepping into March, a small rebound may be seen in property for a short while
Gold price will not pull back too much this year, and in fact it will attempt to move higher whenever there's a pull back.
Stock's name or business that have the element of water like Seatrium, Thaibev... may rebound in mid April
In the month of June… likely 5 June or even earlier, the stock market will start to rebound for the half yearly earnings season. And it will last till the end of August. So shortists do take note of this period to avoid unnecessary margin call. But in between, there may have a pull back in July, but rally continue in August.
After August, the market may turn weaker for Q3 earning season… and if there’s any interest rate cut in June FOMC meeting, market may expect more. However, Sep’s FOMC may not able to keep up with the 2nd rate cut so soon.
Basically, 2024 is not a year with much water element (water represent money and stock market) except June-August… but there’s a couple months where gold elements are strong. So investors may chose to increase your cash holdings instead.
